Twelve beaming Year 6 children from Bethany CE Junior School in Boscombe, Bournemouth, swapped classrooms for clubhouses as they enjoyed a tee-rific day of golf and giggles at the stunning Remedy Oak Golf Club in Dorset – one of England’s top courses. Thanks the Variety Great Days Out programme, this wasn’t just any school trip – it was a day of discovery, confidence-building, and unforgettable fun!

Travelling in style aboard their Sunshine Coach – generously funded in 2023 by Shan and the Bournemouth Boys Club – the group of children were greeted by warm spring sunshine and even warmer welcomes.

Kicking off the day was a three-mile walk across the beautifully manicured fairways, led by the club’s head professional, Dominic Knight. As they soaked in the scenery, the children learned about the challenges and strategy behind each hole – from bunkers to birdies! But the real excitement came when the young visitors grabbed their own clubs and gave the driving range a go – with every single child smashing out a hit and beaming with pride. Bonus fun? A thrilling ride in a golf buggy (yes, smiles were as wide as the fairways).

Lunch was served with a view, as sandwiches and chips were enjoyed on the sun-drenched terrace overlooking the lake. The fun continued with fizzy drink-making (thanks to Marta in catering), a mini barista lesson from Ryan, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the club’s operations with manager Aaron.

The day, made possible by Variety Wessex supporter Peter Jenkins, was more than just a field trip – it was a life-enhancing experience for children who may not otherwise have access to such activities. At Variety, we support children to reach their full potential and this day was a shining example of that.

Elisabeth Rawson-Jones, Pastoral Lead at Bethany CE Junior School, said:

“These two visits to Remedy Oak Golf Club have been absolutely brilliant. Both days have given our pupils such memorable experiences and an introduction to a sport that they may not have been able to access without this opportunity. Thank you Frances and Variety Wessex, Peter, Dominic and everyone at the club for your welcome and for such an enjoyable day.”

Frances Cornelius, Chair of Variety Wessex, added:

“A huge thank you to everyone at Remedy Oak Golf Club for giving these children such an interesting day. The individual tuition given by Dominic was fantastic as was the experience of seeing, at first hand, your beautiful course on such a lovely spring day. Peter, thank you for organising this second golf experience. What a fabulous day it has been for these children.”

This event was part of Variety Great Days Out, our nationwide programme that provides unforgettable, exciting and educational experiences to disadvantaged children – helping them build in confidence, develop life skills, and make positive childhood memories.
