Today, we’re celebrating an incredible father-daughter duo (Jess and Alice) — based in Benfleet, Essex — who are lacing up their running shoes for Variety, the Children’s Charity.

Most of their training runs have taken place along the stunning Southend-on-Sea seafront, where miles of coastline have hosted countless strides, smiles, and sore knees. Together, they’re preparing to run a total of 383.4 miles ahead of race day — come rain, darkness or freezing cold, they’ve powered through side-by-side.

For Jess, supporting Variety is deeply personal. Having worked closely with the charity over the years — supplying and converting our iconic blue Sunshine Coaches — he’s seen first-hand the powerful impact of Variety’s work.

From attending Sunshine Coach presentations to joining fundraising events, he’s witnessed the joy and opportunity these coaches bring to disabled and disadvantaged children across the UK.

One moment that especially stuck with him? Meeting Danny, a student from Five Acre Wood School, who had a dream to turn an old, run-down bus (cheekily dubbed the “Pooh Bus”) into a games room. Inspired, he and his team completed the transformation free of charge — kitting out the bus with sofas, TVs, Wi-Fi and more! Today, it’s a hub of fun, friendship and freedom for the children who use it.

Jess, commented:

“It was a joy to give the bus a full makeover and see the kids’ faces when it was presented back to the school. I’ve seen how an accessible minibus can completely transform children’s lives.”

Running this marathon hasn’t been easy — knee injuries, freezing rain, and dark winter evenings have all tested their endurance. But the pair are determined.

“This has probably been my toughest marathon yet — maybe because I’m not getting any younger! But running with my youngest daughter Alice has made every mile worth it. We’ll cross that finish line together on 27th April — no matter what!”
